Title of Talk
“Towards robust and practically feasible contactless SpO2”
In the presentation named ‘Towards robust and practically feasible contactless SpO2’ I will try to convey both theoretical and experimental insights we have acquired over the years. I will emphasize how obtaining heart rate from camera based PPG is critically different from deducing oxygen saturation levels. In addition to an overview of our past studies, I will also present new work addressing a specific complexity of contactless monitoring, namely the acquisition hard-ware, and how viewing parallax, affects SpO2 accuracy. I will end with an outlook on remaining challenges for contactless SpO2.
Speaker Bio
In 1998 a PhD on laser therapy of vascular anomalies was conducted at the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands. In a postdoctoral position dermatological applications of light were continued at the Beckman Laser Institute (BLI), Irvine California, with a focus on diagnostics rather than therapy. Studied methods included optical coherence tomography, photo-thermal imaging and DC spectroscopy.
At the University of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, imaging methods were applied to ammonia emissions from hog lagoons. Having returned to the BLI in 2002, the focus returned to dermatological diagnostics again. Work was conducted on camera based PPG, aka rPPG or iPPG, a relatively new field back then. In a position at Philips Research, since 2010, this work has continued, now with a focus to extend camera based monitoring with SpO2.
